Research Electro-Optics, Inc (REO) of Boulder Colorado has successfully delivered a set of Z filters for WFCAM to the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UKATC), Edinburgh.
WFCAM is an IR widefield camera for the UK Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) on Mauna Kea , and will be the most capable IR imaging survey instrument in the world.
The filters were manufactured using REO’s ion beam sputter coating technology. This technique enables extremely low absorption, low scatter, and temperature stable films to be deposited with extreme precision. Indeed, David Lee of UKATC commented, “The REO filters fully meet specification and have 15% higher in-band transmission than any comparable components we have previously seen.”
